Tips on Traveling With Your Drone

If you’re planning to start your travel blog with a drone. There are a few things I want to share my tips with you before you travel around the world with your drone. You must check on the drone laws by country before you plan your flight. Because not all country is friendly to drones. Some country, for instance, Malta, allows you to fly the drone even if the whole country itself is basically within the airspace radius. And in some countries like Cuba ban drones and will confiscate your drone if it enters their border security.

Travel With Your Drone

1. Always Bring a Travel Case for Your Drones

You need a travel case for your drone. Seriously. The DJI carrying bag that you bought isn’t going to cut. You’ll need to buy a unique travel case that can store all accessories like chargers, batteries, remote controllers, and additional gears like laptops, smartphones, and more. If you are a DJI Mavic Pro owner, I recommend you to check this, this and this out.

I strongly recommend that you get a travel case that can store up to 4 batteries including the drone. This will give you at least 2 hours of flight time anywhere you go which is a pretty nice travel case to have. Also, most of the travel case that you are looking for can be bought for under $100 just to complete your set. However, if the security and protection of your valuable drone is a high priority. Then I recommend buying a backpack like this.

2. Have Your Drones Check-in As Carry-on

To be honest, I don’t feel safe having my drones check-in as luggage. Not only because someone can steal or it gets lost somehow, but the lithium batteries are also considered as” dangerous goods.” Since the luggage goes through an x-ray that alters the temperature which will impact the batteries. If the airlines insist that you must have your drone travel case check-in as luggage. I recommend that you get fire-proof bags for the batteries. Also buy electric tapes so that you can cover the electric connectors on the batteries.

3. Respect the Airport Security

One of the most important thing if you want to make everything go fast and a breeze for your travel plans is to respect the airport security. Like you, me, and other people, airport security is just human beings. If they ask to inspect your drone and questions about it. Explain what you are doing with the drone and have a casual conversation with them. 99% of the time, they’re genuinely curious about it and just want to know more. I also encourage you to read my 15 travel tips on taking the drone with you so that you can know what to do and don’t.

  1. I have with me my Phantom 4 Pro as a traveler it is important to have accessories, kits, or any device that will make your drone safe and as an owner of the drone, we tend to have more confidence to fly high up in the sky.

    • Hi there Jon!

I 100% absolutely agree with you. Having a travel case and extra important accessories is a must have for safe and better flight experience. The fly more combo pack usually isn’t enough to complete the drone gears setup because there are many things you need to grab such as travel case, camera lens filters, etc. So it is highly recommended to buy accessories if the remote pilot wants to fly with peace of mind.

      • Hi, Mr. Ericksen, will you mind if I ask a question?
A tracking device is a part of the said kits and accessories?
Thank you in advance, I will be glad to read your response.

        • Hello Summer,

All the GPS drones shown in this list have built-in GPS module that tells the drone’s location. However, it is a smart idea if you want to install a tracking device on your drone just to be safe. I recommend either Tile Mate or Spy Tec STI GL300 as your to-go tracking devices for high-end drones.

  2. Active Track is built-in in all High-end drones right? because I have with me my P4 Pro but I still equipped it with this tracking device.

    • Hello John,

Not all the drones that I showed in this guide comes with ActiveTrack feature (Wingsland S6 doesn’t have that feature, but it is still an amazing drone for travelers). Regarding the tracking device, it is highly recommended to do so if the drone is valued more than $300.

  3. I just passed by reading drone blogs that are all about travel because I am also a traveler I used to travel with my drone. As I read your response to John, Keith I am thinking that there is still can appreciate recommending a GPS tracker for their drones and I am glad that you are one of it. So, by the way, I have DJI Inspire 2 Cost $2999, a bit costly that is why I bought and attached a 3G GPS Universal Tracker of trackimo. The used of GPS tracker is really relevant for all drone enthusiast. We can’t predict what might happen during our flight times so it is better to be secure. I appreciate your blog this helps me to expand my knowledge about drones and etc. thank you.
